About the Series:

In an effort to increase member participation in club activities, influence higher levels of attendance at regional Buick events, and to just have some friendly competition amongst club members, MAGNA will again be running our drag racing Points Series for 2008.

Serious racer? Just curious about drag racing? It doesn't matter! Participating in this Points Series will be a GREAT way to learn more about racing, learn more about your car, and just have fun! Veteran club members will be present at all Points Series events to answer questions and take time to help you make your first ¼ mile pass. Don’t miss these chances!

How to Sign Up:

Email us the following information:

  1. Full Name.
  2. turbobuicks.com screen name if applicable.
  3. How you will pay the entry fee (PayPal, U.S. Mail, or in person).

The Points Series entry fee is $10. 100% of all money gathered will go to the winners. Payment can be submitted in person at a club function, via U.S. Mail, or via PayPal.com. Send PayPal payments to: donations @ magnabuick.com (NOTE: remove the spaces around the "@" symbol).

Basic Rules & Information:
  • The 2008 MAGNA Points Series is open to all MAGNA Club Members (must be a member to compete, learn how to join for free here!).
  • Racers must be using cars approved for club membership (Turbo Regal or TTA).
  • Racers do not need to race the same car in all 5 events, it just needs to be a Turbo Regal or TTA.
  • All safety rules are dictated by track personnel.
  • MAGNA is in no way affiliated with the tracks or events listed in our Points Series.
  • The MAGNA Points Series is solely organized by the club, and is not affiliated with any other organization or event.
  • Before eliminations at each event, names of the attending Points Series racers will be put in a hat with one being picked to be Event Coordinator for the day. This person will record the names of all the MAGNA racers as well as class information and final results. However, this person will NOT be awarded any additional bonus points for this role. If chosen, you can opt out of being Event Coordinator, but since this is a job that someone has to do, we hope you can help out. If not racing that day, the Event Coordinator's involvement will still count towards the Participation bonus.
  • If at the end of the Points Series we have two or more racers with the same number of points, the number of elimination wins will be used to decide a winner. If need be, we will also look at the number of runner-up finishes, and so on.
  • An awards presentation will be held at the MAGNA Monthly Get-together immediately following the completion of the Points Series. 100% of all money gathered will go to the winners.

Stay up to date! The best way to keep up to date on event information, updates, points standings, etc., is by frequently visiting the MAGNA bulletin board. The official 2008 MAGNA Points Series thread is here. Subscribe to it so that you keep up to date with any news or changes.

How Points are Awarded:

Series points will be awarded 3 ways:

  1. Points Distribution.
  2. Bonus Points.
  3. Best 4 out of 5.

 

Points Distribution:
Racers will earn points by winning each round of competition.

  • 10 points are awarded for staging in 1st round of eliminations.
  • 10 points are awarded for every round WIN, including 1st round win.
  • 20 extra points for the class/event winner.
  • 10 extra points for the class/event runner-up.

Notes:

    1. Racers do NOT have to compete in the same bracket class as everyone else.
    2. Racers who buy back into a race will NOT earn round win points but WILL earn the extra points if they are the event runner-up or winner.
    3. A tie breaker will be settled in the following order:
      (1) The number of elimination wins.
      (2) The highest overall finish spot across all events(i.e.: event winner, runner up, etc.).
      (3) The number of events participated in (Elimination appearances, followed by DNQ).
      (4) The sum of participation, reaction time and dial-in bonuses.

 

Bonus Points:
Racers will have the opportunity to win Bonus Points at each event. Bonus Points are used to encourage racers to participate in all events (Participation), reward good driving (Reaction Time & Dial-In), and help out with club duties (Event Coordination).

Bonus Points Details
Participation (P)
10
Racers that show up for all 5 events will be awarded 10 additional bonus points at the end of the MAGNA Points Series. In order to qualify, you must register for the event and make at least one time trial run.
Reaction Time (RT)
5
 Awarded for a reaction time of .00x or better (ex: .003). Each racer can only earn this bonus once per event, and only during eliminations.
Running your Dial-In (DI)
5
 Awarded to the racer who runs their exact Dial-In during eliminations (ex: 12.51 on a 12.51 dial). Each racer can only earn this bonus once per event, and only during eliminations.
Event Coordination (EC)
1
Before eliminations at each event, names will be put in a hat with one being picked to be Event Coordinator for the day. This person will be awarded 1 bonus point for this role. This person will record the names of all the MAGNA racers as well as class information and final results. Each racer can only be picked ONCE for this role during the series. You do not need to be racing this day to get this bonus, but you must be signed up for the Points Series prior to being selected. Selected racers have the option of denying their selection, and at which time another name will be selected. If the designation is delegated to someone else, that person does not get the 1 bonus point.
Carnage (C)
5

Effective 9/22/08 -- 5 bonus points will be awarded to a racer that has a mechanical failure that ends their day of racing or clearly affects their performance during at a Points Series event, makes the fixes, and stages their car at the next event. Regardless of complete or partial failure, the failure must clearly affect performance and be serious enough that it must be fixed before the next event. This failure can happen at any time during time trials or eliminations. The racer must make the fixes in order to stage their car in time trials or eliminations at the next event in order to get the bonus. The point of this bonus is to award the racer that's previous performance was affected by the failure, and they took considerable time and effort to make make the repairs in order to race at the next event (e.g: blown head gasket, wiped cam, broken axle, blown turbo, blown trans, etc.).

In order to qualify for the bonus, the repairs must be serious enough to require the removal of one of the following parts:

  • Engine (turbo, front cover, lower intake manifold, cylinder heads or the entire engine).
  • Transmission (the complete trans).
  • Rear (driveshaft, axles, gears/posi/spool or the complete rear)

(example: A wiped cam requires removal of lower intake and front cover)

 

Best 4 out of 5:

There are 5 events in the Points Series. Racers earn points from their performance at each event, however we’re only going to count the points from 4 of the 5 events.

Why? The Best 4 out of 5 is being used to: 1) give us the biggest field of competitors possible, 2) not discourage anyone from competing if they miss an event, and 3) allow you to "throw out" a race that you may have done poorly in so that you don't ruin your chances of doing well in the series.

Notes:

  1. If an event is cancelled, then we (MAGNA) will choose a rain date, which we will hold at the same track.
  2. Racers who compete in all events will still receive the 1 Participation bonus point.
  3. All bonus points earned during any of the Points Series events will still count towards your final series score.
